The Arc of Pierce County is dedicated to advocating for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families throughout Pierce County. Our goal is to shine a light on the path of supports and services that will assist individuals and their families, to advocate for them in legislative and community supports and help them become stronger advocates for themselves.

We are currently working on raising matching funds for a $5,000 grant we received from the Foundation for the Challenged. The Community Living Fund of Washington will provide aid dollars to qualified individuals who live without basic needs such as bed linens, pots and pans or a comfortable bed. Having the money to purchase such items is a common problem among people with developmental disabilities, the majority of whom live below the federally recognized poverty level and are under-employed and under-educated, due largely to a lifetime of economic and social barriers. Another project we are working toward is our Respite-Away program. which is designed to give a break to parents and other primary caregivers of individuals with developmental disabilities who live at home with their families. A Respitality weekend could include a night for the parents at a nice hotel, dinner out and movie passes or some other entertainment. A voucher will also be provided for a respite provider to care for the individual while the parents enjoy their time away.

Watch for the "You Know Me!" campaign to kick off soon. Billboard ads will feature photos of local children and adults with developmental disabilities and highlighting their involvement in our community.

The Lego Club is coming soon! Children with disabilities, their friend and family get together monthly to create things with Lego blocks and interact with others in a fun-filled environment.
